Popular filmmaker Alfred Zeisler fled Germany in 1933, shortly after the election of Adolf Hitler as Chancellor, as part of the first wave of artists who left for fear of what the Nazi regime was becoming. Ten years later, having already directed Cary Grant in The Amazing Adventure, Zeisler embarked on his most ambitious American film, an unfliching look at one of the most reviled and reputed officers of the Nazi regime, Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbles. The film, told through a series of flashbacks, tells of Goebbles’ rise through of the new German Socialist Partyfrom failed playwrite to becoming the head of Nazi propaganda machine. The film stars Wolfgang Zilzer, terrifying as “the Scoundrel of Berlin,” and future Titanic star Gloria Stuart.
